The Complete Homeowners Guide to Bathroom Upgrades!

$

0
Believe it or not, my first project when I was interning at a Architecture firm was designing toilets. Back then, it felt a lot like a 'shitty job' (no pun intended), but I soon realised the importance of a great toilet or bathroom.

Much like searching for a hotel, I'll always look for the cleanest if not prettiest bathroom I can find. It's pretty much 50% of my decision making right there. Which is why when it comes to bathrooms or toilets, I myself am pretty particular.

Most of you might agree that the bathroom is possibly one of the most overlooked ares in your home, but one of the most commonly used and underappreciated areas. It's also considered as the most important room in the entire home - as you can live without a kitchen, but not without a bathroom.

It is also more prone to general wear-and-tear as compared to others. Moisture, steam and humidity generated in the bathroom is one of the main contributors.

Now imagine finding your dream home on johor land, but the bathroom looks like it's still stuck in the 1980s. That wouldn't be very nice now would it? And after spending a fortune, I'm pretty sure you'll want your bathroom to look modern and sleek, if not classy and beautiful. So here are some tips that you might need, in order to refurbish your bathroom the more economical way.

    Replace the tiles

One of the easiest way to give your bathroom a complete makeover is by replacing the tiles. I'd recommend a 2x2ft or a 1x2ft tiles in order to make it look more spacious. This is probably the most expensive part of the refurbishment but it does make a huge difference!

The key is to keep the bright and simple, with monotonous color-scheme. Black, grey and white, with hints of brown or timber would elevate the look of the bathroom. I'd also recommend some mosaic tiles to play around with patterns or colors if you're the fun type of person.

The refurbishment of the bathroom will not only make you enjoy showering, it'll also help increase the value of your property. To any new home buyers, chances are, they'll be looking closely to your toilet.

    Install a glass shower screen

Another great way to make your bathroom look spacious is by installing a glass shower screen. Not only does it take away the need for old-looking shower curtains, it also blends in 2 different space in one - the toilet and shower, without compromising aesthetics. If anything, it helps elevate it.

    Incorporate a bathroom vanity

Instead of just a boring sink, think of a complete vanity set with the sink installed. Also, pay attention to your mirrors as to whether it matches the counter top. With a touch of luxury, your property value will definitely increase.

    Refinish instead of replacing

Instead of replacing bathroom fixtures outright when they are still working well, you can opt to refinish them instead. For example, you can save a bundle by having your larger fixtures such as the bathtub resurfaced or having your faucets and hardware reglazed.

    Paint the walls

One of the cheapest ways to upgrade any room is to simply just give it a new paint job. Unlike other upgrades which might require professional help, painting is a job that you can do it yourself. A change in colour can refresh the look of any room and give it a new personality. However, do remember to select a paint that is suitable to the moist conditions of the bathroom. Select anti-fungal paint to save you trouble of constantly cleaning your bathroom walls.

    Update the smaller fixtures

If you're not looking to change anything huge, you could start by changing smaller fixtures within your bathroom. Start with the sink, if not the faucets or even the mirror. A slight upgrade will change the aesthetic and feel of the place. Call it a quick visual facelift. Even changing something as small as the door handles, or even the choice of soap dispenser will help!

    Play around with lighting

Lighting is key to setting the mood of your bathroom. If you're planning on dipping in your bathtub, or even taking a long shower, then a dim illuminating ambience would be the best fit. If your bathroom lacks natural light, then placing the right fixture will solve that.

Accessorize with accents

Small details such as adding an interesting frame around your mirror or coordinating the materials of your fixtures and your furniture can go a long way in improving the aesthetics in your bathroom. You can also add decorative elements such as sconces on the walls or ceiling medallions around your hanging light fixtures to give your bathroom more decorative depth.

    Consider professional cleaning

Though it may sound a little weird, hiring a professional cleaning service is actually quite common overseas. You don't want your bathroom to look or smell dirty, so why not get a cleaner (or have your cleaners) wash it up? Not only will it make you feel better when you enter, it'll be a lot more comforting to know that unwanted germs & bacterias thoroughly washed out.

All and all, remember, the bathroom is just as important, if not more important than the other spaces in your home. Give it some love and I guarantee that it'll repay the favour

Rubbing Wasabi on Your Head to Prevent Baldness? Seriously?

$
0
0

Today's latest headlines comes directly from Japan, and it states that if you're going bald, the remedy to that is rubbing Wasabi on your head. A common condiment to sushi and a wide array of Japanese cuisine, wasabi has its own health benefits. But recent reports from Japanese Wasabi company - Kinin, stated that chemicals found within the wasabi plant help regrow hair faster than current hair-loss remedies such as Rogaine (minoxidil).

The chemical isosaponarin, which Kinin claims helps stimulate hair regrowth, was previously noted to aid in human collagen production. The second chemical of note in wasabi, 6-MSITC, has been shown to inhibit breast cancer cell growth.

Do note that they meant real Wasabi and not Wasabi you can find in tubes or can, laying around in the supermarket. Don't be alarmed, but fresh Wasabi here in Malaysia can be extremely expensive. Even in the U.S, it's priced roughly around the $80 mark.

Now, if you're looking for another way to regrow your hair naturally - onions can be frapped and put on the head for an accelerated growth. A study from 2002, claims that onion juice is actually effective in treating alopecia areata, a less common form of hair loss.

One last atrocious way is by eating plenty of Japanese curry. According to RocketNews24, Nakagawa feels the mixture of aromatic spices generally found within curry have the added benefit of increasing blood flow, which in turn makes men's hair grow. In particular, Nakagawa says, the active ingredient in chili peppers—capsaicin—promotes circulation, which can make for long, luxurious locks. Nakagawa also believes turmeric, saffron, and nutmeg help the hair-growth process.

Donute's Dirty Bun - Launch

It simply doesn't get any dirtier than this. The current craze right now revolving a bun that's deemed 'dirty', is appearing everywhere, and it's fairly easy to see why.

The bun itself is packed with chocolatey goodness. At the very core, it's a croissant-like effect with 16 layers of Danish pastry is made with 84% French Butter and imported Japan flour. This creates a light, fluffy yet creamy taste, that binds really well with the chocolate.

You'll also get bits of French chocolate nuggets rated at 52% cocoa! It's quite bitter but it does give it that nice balance.

The whole idea of this bun is to stuff your face onto it, making it seem like you're having poop around your face/mouth. The additional 100% French dark cocoa powder on top really does help in that sense. It's also a great way to counter all the sweetness from within.

Currently, it's priced at RM6.90/pc, with limited stocks everyday. So if you'd like to try one of the more authentic Dirty Bun, do visit any Donutes Store today!

Eight Avenue New Spanish Menu 2018 @ Publika, KL

The Eight Avenue has been a pretty popular place in Publika - especially when it comes to their selection of cocktails. They're also famed for having pretty girls on most nights - if that's what you're looking for. Now, they've just launched a variety of dishes, crafted specially by Chef Pedro. Here's what they have to offer.

Garlic Gambas

Starting strong with a prawns cooked with garlic, herbs, and olive oil with a side of toasted baguette. The tiger prawns were fresh and cooked to juicy perfection. Each bite is packed with the natural juices of the prawns, as well as a really nice & fragrant garlic scent.

Angels & Demons

The Eight Avenue's signature item that has been around since the beginning. A unique mix of smoked salmon & honeydew, as well as bacaon & prunes. I personally enjoyed the smoked salmon variant as I felt that balance between sweet & salty works marvelously here.

Charcoal Pork Sliders

Those looking for something heartier, but not too heavy should definitely try out their Charcoal Pork Sliders. Juicy pork patty served on a bed of sauteed mushrooms and lettuce, encased in a homemade charcoal bun. It's simple, easy and quite tasty.

Patatas Tres Salsas

This dish was surprisingly unique - it's potatoes with 3 different sauces within. They're cooked nice and soft, without being too mushy nor dense. The core has been filled with Aioli, Pomodoro & Brava. Cutting through them is similar to cutting through butter, and they do taste like posh baked potatoes.

Picantes Chicken Wings Con Raita Y Verduritas

This is The Eight Avenue's take on the traditional buffalo wings, using a blend of marinate they've came up with themselves. The result is a slightly sweet and herb-ish taste, with an optional dip on the side. I personally prefer something spicier, but I can see non-spicy eaters enjoying this.

Pork Albondigas En Salsa De Tomate

If you're a fan of Ikea meatballs, then you might like their version of the pork balls. Hand-crafted and baked to juicy perfection, these little (but surprisingly huge) niblets of pork are well packed with flavour, and the additional salsa on top gives it truly helps out with its acidity. In the center, you'll find a refreshing mint-pea puree that just helps cut through those fatty flavours.

Pork Tenderloin Roulade

I personally enjoyed this very much as I find the roulade to be done quite perfectly. The bacon that's wrapping the tenderloin really infuses that salty finish within, while the mixed greens on the inside gave it a vibrantly-fresh zing. The combination was simple, but delicious. On the side, you'll find something similar to the Patatas Tres Salsas, but done with a different sauce.

Honey Glazed BBQ Ribs

Another one of the Eight Avenue's Signature item - the honey glazed BBQ ribs. Served in a generous portion, and grilled to tender perfection. The meat was fork-tender as it falls off the bone very easily. The BBQ sauce was also a little sweet, perhaps due to the honey, but it was pretty good.

What I do love however, was the side of baked sweet potato. That was godly. Loved that.

Spicy Prawn Fettucine

Like most places, pasta is a pretty common dish. Their Spicy Prawn Fettuccine was alright, as I do not enjoy pastas as much. The portion is quite generous though.

Now The Eighth Avenue is definitely a place where you can indulge in their drinks, and I'd highly recommend it. Some of my personal favourite of the night was; Birds of Paradise, Painkiller (this was awesome), Suit & Tie, and one last one which I've forgotten the name.

So if you're looking for a place where both the drinks and food are fantastic, I think The Eighth Avenue at Publika would be a good choice. They have a fairly dark and cozy ambiance, limited & more intimate seating, as well as a variety of foods & customized cocktails you'll love.

Do check out their FB page - https://www.facebook.com/theeighthavenuekl/ as well as they often do promos and product launches there.

Korea's most popular casual Toast brand has finally went beyond just being in KLIA2. Famous for their custom-toast and coffee, Isaac Toast is the leading brand in Korea with over 800 outlets nationwide. So if you're looking for some of the best toasts in town, you might want to give them a try.

Everything is made fresh to order, where you can watch them grill your toast right in front of you. With over 9 items to choose from, you're sure to find one that you'll like.

Grilling on the egg patty - which is shaped perfectly square to fit their toast. Everything is made to order, with the freshest ingredients possible here in Malaysia. Custom-made white bread, cheddar cheese and fluffy eggs. What's really unique is the special secret sauce that comes directly from Korea, that gives it that added depth of flavour.

On the other side, there's where all the meats are grilled - mainly beef bacon and chicken ham.

Some of their most popular choices.

I went for their newest item - Kimchi Toast. Sure it may sound weird, but I do enjoy the added acidic flavour that cuts through all that richness. The perfectly crispy toast with creamy soft egg, cheese and ham works well in balancing the taste of kimchi.

To be fair, it really is quite full.

For added value, their RM20 Combo Set comes with a selection of Signature Toasts with a side of coffee, tea or soda.

Oh, be sure to try out some of their coffee as well. I liked my Iced Americano, which I found had a pretty strong body and depth. Overall, if you're looking for a quick snack around 1 Utama, either before a movie or something, Isaac Toast may just offer that balance of not being too full, nor too empty.

They're also offering a great deal for breakfast - RM10 for a toast and a drink.

If you're still in the mood for some toast after breakfast, their RM20 Combo Set is definitely a great  choice. It comes with a selection of Isaac Toast's Signature toast with a side of coffee, tea or soda.

Makan Kitchen @ Double Tree by Hilton, KL

I love buffets, especially when it's at some fancy hotel where they have a widespread of selection to choose from. Here at Double Tree by Hilton, the fare of food available is nothing less than exceptional. They have 4 different stations, each with its own unique choices.

I like to start with the centerstage, where all the fresh foods are placed such as Sushi, Sashimi, Oysters, Prawns, salads and many more. There aren't much choices for sashimi, but for what's worth, they're pretty decent. Fairly fresh and cut by a chef on the spot. Served with some soy sauce and wasabi - all is well on my first round.

Followed by some fresh salad, grilled oysters and of course, my favourite prawns. Selections were fresh and enjoyable. Plenty of mix-&-match options for the salad, as well as a variety of dressings too.

My next stop is the Chinese section - where they have my favourite double-boiled soup. Each serving was well packed with flavour, and the essence of chicken & seafood was eminent. Loved the soup. As for the other offerings such as roasted duck, chicken, dumplings and several others were pretty flavoursome.

Followed by a tour towards the Indian side of things where they do freshly baked naan breads, alongside a fantastic selection of curries and varuval. The lamb varuval is definitely something worth trying out as it was some of the most flavourful dishes available. The crab nasi briyani too was great!

And of course, like any other buffets, the desserts are extremely important. Here, we were given a huge variety where it ranges from local to asian, and even international desserts such as cakes, pastries and puffs. They also offer homemade ice cream every day, which to me is an added bonus.

All and all, what Makan by Double Tree by Hilton has to offer was absolutely delicious. Everything from the variety to the quality of each and every product, most of them were enjoyable. There were some hit and miss with some of their offerings, but overall, definitely well worth the money.

Breadstory's latest concept - Lady Croissant, is a croissant specialty store that had just launched its first outlet in Berjaya Times Square, KL. The store focuses on the one core product, which is their range of freshly baked sweet & savoury croissants.

79% Dark Chocolate Croissant - RM3.80

Each and every croissant is made fresh right here on the spot.

Strawberry Chocolate Croissant - RM3.80

Like every specialty store, there are a variety of flavours to choose from. Here we have one of the prettiest one - the Strawberry Chocolate Croissant.

Mentaiko Croissant - RM3.80

Something a little different, and part of their savoury series - the Mentaiko Croissant. It's a little odd for me, but it's unique nonetheless.

Garlic Butter Croissant - RM3.80

Another savoury series, and something a little more classic - garlic butter croissant. It's both aromatic and flavoursome, coupled with its crusty and flaky croissant, it was indeed quite tasty.

Chilli Crab Croissant - RM4.80

This was amongst my favourite as the uniqueness of the spicy chili crabs worked with its buttery neighbor. I personally enjoyed it, I do know some who don't, but it's definitely worth checking out.

Golden Slated Egg Lava Croissant - RM3.80

It may look a little boring on the outside, but deep within is where the goodness is at. Combining the success of lava tarts, salted egg and croissant, comes Lady Croissant's version of an epic pastry. Definitely part of my favourites as well.

Original Croissant - RM3.20

Something a little more basic perhaps?

*Promo updated to BUY 4 FREE 2!!

All and all, there are 11 different flavours to choose from, with the 2 signature being Chilli Crab Croissant & Musang King Croissant. Both these croissant were really tasty, and the fillings were quite generous.

I've also had the chance to try out their Salted Caramel Croissant, which was delightful. The flakiness of the croissant, the richness of French butter and the overall experience of something so flavoursome, was great.

They're also offering a Buy 4 Free 2 promo! So why not just get 1 whole box for yourselves?

Besides those tasty croissants, Lady Croissant x Breadstory also offers Breadstory's line of breads, pastries & cake. All your favourite buns are available here as well! 飛凡火锅 Fei Fan Hong Kong Hot Pot @ First Subang, SS15, Subang Jaya

Calling all steamboats, hotpot and mala lovers, Fei Fan Hotpot is definitely a place of visit to satisfy that soupy craving of yours. Similar to Suki-ya or Suki-shi, Fei Fan Hotpot is a buffet style steamboat restaurant with a variety of proteins, vegetables, noodles and soup to choose from.

Starting with the soup; they have 4 different broths for you to choose. Their Signature Pork Bone soup, which have been cooked over low-heat for several hours to bring out that sweet & savoury umami pork essence.

Another one of my personal favourites would be the Pepper Pig's Stomach Soup, one that most of them find it a little too 'pepper-y'. I liked mine incredibly the way Fei Fan Hotpot did it, as it was both 'pepper-y' and spicy. It also had a nice rich and savoury taste.

The remaining 2 options are Tomato Soup & Spicy Mala Soup, which I found to be alright. If you're into something a little bit more tangy, then the Tomato Soup is the way to go. Quite obviously, if you liked yours a little spicy, then Mala would be the best choice.

In terms of proteins, they have a ton of options to choose from. Some of my personal favourites and highly recommended items are:

Beef Slices; as they were neither too fat nor lean - just about right.

Pork Slices; nice soft and fat

Pork & Beef Balls; these balls are all made inhouse by cleaving. Highly recommended and definitely do go for them.

Look at that gorgeous piece of sliced beef - perfectly pink in the middle, juicy and incredibly flavourful!

There are also plenty of other options, but I only take beef and occasionally pork for steamboat. I'm not too fond of chicken.

If terms of vegetables, there's more than enough for everyone. With a variety of leafy greens and rather pricey broccoli, this section of the steamboat is definitely one of my favourites. Compared to most steamboat buffets out there, there aren't only more options here, but they're a lot fresher as well.

They also recommended us their homemade udon noodles, which is done with an authentic recipe from Japan. The udon was incredibly springy and smooth, definitely worth trying out if you like noodles.

Otherwise, there's also the standard Yee Mee available.

Sauces, like most Chinese steamboat places, allows you to mix and match to create your own flavour. Choose from the variety of toppings as well as sauces and develop your own unique dipping sauce!

Drinks such as orange and passionfruit juice, as well as infused water are available. Softserve machine comes with 2 flavours - vanilla and chocolate!

Interiorly, it's both spacious and comfortable with a good amount of ventilation so you don't have to feel overly stuffy. There's still smoke here and there but hey, that's the fun part about steamboat.

The prices are also incredibly reasonable at RM35.90 per adult for a 120 minute session. There's definitely plenty of time to enjoy everything if not most of the items on the menu. There's also various student discounts and promos available throughout the day, so do remember to source for them!

Top 10 Best Cafe in Singapore

With more than 100 cool cafes merging out, it can be hard for people to keep track of them. Hence, we are here to help you guys to check out some unique and instagrammable café in Singapore.

1) Atlas Coffeehouse

Atlas, not ‘atas’ coffeeshop. Just because this café is located at Bukit Timah doesn’t mean that it is ‘atas’ (meaning ‘above’ in Malay, ‘high class’ in Singlish). Atlas Coffeehouse is helmed by the team behind Assembly Coffee, known for their Shibuya toasts, waffles and coffee.
ATLAS is the acronym for At-Land-Air-Sea, and the interior reflects part of the theme. Industrial cemented walls to represent the Land, natural sunlight (and air) pouring in at the window seats, deep navy blue region with white tiles shaped in a wave-like manner representing the Sea.
We hear their Eclipse Cold Tea Macchiato is one to try, alongside particularly fluffy Banana Butterscotch Pancakes and an impressive Mediterranean Pita Fry Up.

Address: 6 Duke’s Rd, Singapore 268886
Opening hours: Tue-Sun 8am – 7pm

3) Sarnies

There’s a reason why Sarnies remains one of the longest standing cafés in Singapore. Operating in the heart of Telok Ayer since 2011, this bustling spot has gained a cult-like status among coffee fanatics, healthy food proponents, and legions of tired office workers itching for a good cuppa and DIY breakfast.
Lunch time sees satisfying eats like the Mexican Salad, and once the weekend hits, the bearded hipsters and personal trainers are out in full force for a heaping plate of Eggs Benedict. That, and a double shot latte to kick start the festivities.

Address:  136 Telok Ayer St, Singapore 068601
Opening hours: Mon-Tue 7.30am – 10.30pm
                            Wed-Fri 7.30am – 11.30pm, 8.30am – 4pm.

Home to the former World Siphon Coffee Champion and three-time Singapore National Barista & Latte Art Champion Ryan Kieran Tan, Strangers’ Reunion has continued to push its standards over the years. Popular drinks include the potent White Magic and their Seven-Spice Chai Latte, or you could just go for any of the hand-brewed cuppas on hand that week. Food-wise, the café has a penchant for healthier but no less tasty dishes, which suits in just fine.

And as you can expect, their sandwiches are mighty delicious too.

Address: 1 Keong Saik Rd, #01-02, Singapore 089109
Operating Hours: Mon-Fri 8am – 9pm
                             Sat-Sun 9am – 6pm

9) Punch

Great brunch vibes are about at Punch, where natural lights are aplenty and the decor monochromatic and Instagram-able. For the perfect afternoon, dive into stacks of Earl Grey Pancakes and for the indulgent, perhaps a bowl of Tomato Bacon Soup with Grilled Cheese Toast. Whether you’re going for a batch brew, Chemex, V60, or even a Chai Latte, it’s safe to say that the drinks here are fabulous.

Address: 32 North Canal Rd, Singapore 059288
Operating Hours: Tue-Sun 8am – 6pm

10) RONIN

Ronin has been a mainstay along the trendy HongKong Street since 2013, offering its iconic Genovese ‘Super Brazil’ coffee along with a short but much-lauded repertoire of sandwiches and breakfast staples. The place is usually very crowded, so we recommend heading down on off-peak hours.

Hungry and tired? Craving for finger-licking-good ribs, steaks and other meats? There are plenty of choices on the island to have your meats plated and served. Do consider these 10 American & Australian-style barbecue that are fanning the flames of Singapore's smoked meat craze.

1)Decker Barbecue

Low, slow and finger-licking good. That is the ethos of Decker Barbecue where the melt-in-your-mouth brisket ($16 per 100g) is slow cooked to juicy goodness for 16 hours using their on-site smoker at the back of the restaurant.
Their range of slow-smoked meats — brisket, pulled pork, chopped beef, ribs, chicken, turkey — are best sampled via their Meat Platter (three meats [600g total] & two sides for $72), or a sandwich (from $16-$20) for smaller appetites.
Wash it all down with craft brews (Red Hook, Brooklyn Lager) and end off with the banana pudding ($8). As supply is limited and demand is high, aim to get there by 8pm or risk being told they're all out for the day.

Imagine a meat resto gone modern, contemporary bar-bistro – that’s Dallas Restaurant & Bar. While there are three outlets at prime locations in SG – Marina Bay Sands, Suntec City and Boat Quay. It’s the one at the Quay that you should head to if you want a view of the Singapore River and Central Business District’s Skyscrappper skyline. Black Angus Ribeye Steak and the baby back ribs should satisfy the meat lovers, as will the Wagyu and lamb burgers.

6) The Market Grill

People come specially to be seen at this homey-meets-industrial looking diner for a few reasons: it’s located at the hip Telok Ayer, has rolled out a new Saturday brunch (that has a sweet & savoury banana bacon toast) and it stills offers the most drool-worthy meat dishes. Other highlights include the hipster-beloved chicken and waffle- it comes drizzled with whisky maple syrup and lobster roll.

                                Closed on Sun

7) Burnt Ends

Burnt Ends is not the most conventional restaurant in Singapore.Earning a space on the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2018 at Number 12 is an indication of both good food and reputation. It is a modern Australian-style barbecue restaurant which offers counter seats and open kitchen, possibly positioned to be more casual than fine dining.

This is no ordinary barbecue. They have their customized machines ovens and grills where food can be smoked, roasted, or even cooked directly on coals to 700 degrees Celsius. When the heat is up, the flavours are enhanced.

The menu is seasonal, and some offerings then included a Pork Tomahawk, Apple and Bourbon Glaze ($23 per 100g), Rump Cap Burnt Onion and Bone Marrow ($26 per 100g), Alfonsino Red Bream ($70 for 5 people) and King Crab and Garlic ($65). I would recommend Burnt Ends in a heartbeat, for its uniqueness and its take on barbecue that is probably not available anywhere else in the region.

Flavours are intense, food is heaty, and very tasty.

Dean & Deluca @ Khwaeng Silom, Bangkok

It's been awhile since I last wrote, or even travel for that matter. However, I'm here, back at Bangkok once again for a short trip. Upon arrival and checking in, the first place of visit is Dean & Deluca located at Khwaeng Silom, Bangkok. There are several Dean & Deluca located around Bangkok but to what I know, the one at Sathorn Square is the largest and prettiest one that you should definitely visit.

Upon arrival, you'll find a rather generous porch - and there lies Dean & Deluca. Stepping in to this massive building and you'll be greeted by the waiters, directing you to your seats.

From afar, it has that really nice and fancy European-styled grocer. Everything from snacks, salad, fancy sandwiches, alcohol, cheese and even premium raw ingredients are available. The cafe is massive, with a variety of different seating options.

The menu itself is fairly extensive, though it seem to lean towards a breakfast-brunch sort of thing. Of course, you could go for the lobster, as well as ribs and pork loin, but overall, the vibe makes it a really breakfast-y place.

I've ordered the NY Pastrami Sandwich, which is priced at 395 Baht. It isn't entirely cheap, but for the setup and decor, it's expected. The sandwich came with a nice buttered toast, stuffed with quite a generous amount of pulled beef weighing in at approx 100g. Smeared with English mustard and served with coleslaw and pickled cucumbers on the side.

I've also tried their Almond Croissant, which I find to be okay. Priced rather steeply at 90 Baht, the croissant isn't something that I would recommend as I felt the price to be overvalued.

The tea too is a little pricey - with it being not refillable. For 235 Baht, one could enjoy quite a number of beverages outside and be diagnosed with water poisoning. Anyway, you'll pretty much be paying for the environment more than the tea.

The tea isn't bad, but it isn't all great. Made using leaves from a famous French tea company, the flavours were clean and really smooth. It's aromatic and all, but personally, definitely not something I would go for again.

In short, I've taken this meal as more of a relaxing breakfast after a long week. Nothing was too damn good, but everything felt just right. So, if you want to feel a little fancy here in Bangkok, you could give Dean & Deluca a try.

SevenFriday Space @ Robinsons, Four Seasons KLCC

SevenFriday is a fairly new company when it comes to watch making. Founded in 2012, the Swiss watchmaker designs, manufactures and sells industrial inspired watches and several other accessories. Over the years, they've garnered quite a following with their non-conforming sense of style, as well as its rugged and more durable aesthetics.

Now, they've stepped up their game by providing a galleria/space where you can enjoy some of the finest coffees, cakes and desserts, while browsing through their wide range of collection.

Here at SevenFriday's latest venue at Robinson's, Four Seasons, there lounge chairs for you to sit and relax. Enjoy your glass of coffee and perhaps try out some of their signature desserts!

I could wholeheartedly recommend the Abao Blend if you're a fan of chocolaty notes. The balance between its subtle bitterness along with its rather strong chocolate flavour is an absolute delight. It does resemble mocha a little, but a much stronger version.

Another dessert that is currently trending would be there Burnt Cheesecake. Done slightly different here, where the plating is a lot prettier than what you'll find elsewhere. The Cheesecake itself is fairly dense, but with more mousse-like cream at the core. The sight of lightly refreshed sorbet does indeed make the dish a whole lot lighter.

Goes really well with coffee though.

Last but not least, SevenFriday's take on our classic cendol. Served with a red-bean potong ice cream and an extra espresso shot for added body.

So for those looking to get a new watch, or perhaps are in the midst of looking for a very specific SevenFriday model, I'm quite certain that they have it here.

Simple Japanese Fine Dining in KL @ Ebisu, Pavilion Hotel, Kuala Lumpur

$

I personally am a fan of Japanese cuisine - especially when it's a little fancier. I mean, who doesn't? With that being said, here is Ebisu, one of Pavilion Hotel Kuala Lumpur's latest Japanese Fine Dining restaurant and bar located on the 8th floor, overlooking a gorgeous KL City view with a warm, cozy and glamorous ambiance.

The common dining area.

Like with most of Pavilion's design, everything looks elegantly simple, yet posh. There are several dining areas available within the restaurant, as well as a private function room which comfortably seats about 20 pax.

I believe this is where the Teppanyaki section is, where you dine right in front of the chef in action.

High table, bar counter, lounges and even outdoor space where you can dine where you love most.

Kicking things off with a light and simple salad with housemade dressing, served with Japanese tofu and cherry tomatoes. Like most salads, it's pleasant and a great way to start a meal.

Ebisu Chawan Mushi

One of Ebisu's Signature dishes, and one of my favourite dishes of the night. A simple serving of custardy-smooth Japanese steamed egg topped with a generous amount of assorted seafood, prawns and Ikura, and prepared with mirin, dashi, soy sauce and shiitake mushrooms.

A flavour bomb to say the least, and the essence of seafood is evident within this dish. Just look at the size of that prawn!

Grilled Salmon with Assorted Vegetables

Next on our menu was a simple serving of  pan-seared salmon filet glazed with soysauce and served alongside a bed of grilled vegetables. Fish was quite nicely seared with a good layer of caramelisation, alongside a slightly salty sauce that coats the fish quite evenly.

Chunky, flaky and fresh.

Sake

Before anything else, Japanese Sake truly compliments what I'm about to have next. Here at Ebisu, they have a variety of different imported Japanese sake for you to try and pair with your meal. Do ask them what's the best for your taste and they'll recommend it to you.

Sushi Moriawase

Like every good Japanese restaurant, the skills of the chef are tested on this very plate of Nigiri. Here at Ebisu Japanese Fine Dining, you need not worry about the quality of the fish as they are all fresh and plump.

From the left, we have a type of Artic Surf Clam Nigiri called Akagai, followed by our Malaysian favourite Salmon, Yellowtail, and Maguro (tuna).

On top, we have a cube of Japanese egg, my personal favourite Ikura Nigiri, Ebi (prawns) and a medley of pickled radish, tuna and cucumber sushi rolls, served alongside soy sauce, pickled ginger and wasabi.

Absolutely beautiful, definitely a place worth celebrating.

Ebi Nigiri

Sweet Japanese Egg

Yuzu Ice Cream

For dessert, I had a scoop of housemade Yuzu Ice Cream. It's light and zesty, which makes it a great after meal dessert to cleanse the palette.

Red Bean Soup with Mochi

Or perhaps go with another one of their desserts - red bean soup with Mochi inside. It's fairly sweet and the mochi is very chewy. I enjoyed the chew but not so much on the sugary part of the dessert as I don't really like sweet stuff. Overall, it's pretty okay.

All and all, dishes offered here at Ebisu Pavilion Hotel Kuala Lumpur was more than satisfactory, and here is the chef that made it all happened. Ebisu is a fantastic place if you're looking to hold any form of celebration - be it birthdays, anniversary, a company dinner or even date night. The view and the ambiance gives it a great vibe to dine in.

If you're looking for round two, just head on down to their brand new Whisky Cove, located right below at Level 7M.

It's a warm and cozy place with a variety of seating arrangement. Private rooms are also available and it also comes with a view. The menu is quite extensive and they do have food as well. If Japanese wasn't filling enough for you, why not try out their Wagyu steak? Snacks are available too!

Here we have some smoking going on, along with some coffee beans.

I'm not so much of a drinker myself but I can say that this tangerine concoction was indeed delicious.

Taste by Champignons @ EKO MALL, Cheras

There ain't doubt that Cheras is definitely a place with an abundance of restaurants and kopitiam. However, finding a place for a decent steak seems more of a challenge than getting all A's for SPM. Anywho, with the introduction of the latest Brutalism-Architecture (or some may just call it incomplete) mall by the name of EKO CHERAS, there might just be one that is up for the task.

Going by the name of "Taste by Champignons", this simple yet fairly modern-looking restaurant offers some of the best western dishes around town. Ranging from their humble pastas to their luxurious Australian Grain-fed Striploin steak.

Australian Grain-fed Striploin Steak - RM45

Kicking things off strong with their beef. A simple cut serving of Australian Striploin steak seasoned beautifully and cooked to a wondrous pink. It's a simple dish that highlights the quality of meat, served with your choice of 2 sides.

Undeniably beautiful - perfectly cooked. Here I have a side of salad with a homemade vinaigrette dressing and a bowl of chips. No sauce on the steak although there are options to. I prefer mine simply with salt and pepper.

Just look at that char on the crust.

For a price of RM45 - I think it's definitely one of the cheapest steak in town that still retains its qualities.

Smoked Bacon and Mushroom Pizza - RM20

Taste by Champignons also offers a limited selection (precisely 4 at the moment) of pizzas, all made from scratch. Here I had the simplest option - mushroom and bacon on tomato sauce with cheese. It's a thin crust pizza and I felt that the toppings were fairly generous.

Works great as an appetizer to share among the table.

Squid Ink Pasta with Market Seafood - RM38

Definitely the more expensive of the pastas, but I'd think it's worth the extra. Squid Ink pasta is made inhouse, which gives it that really nice firm yet tender bite to the pasta itself. topped with cherry tomatoes, button mushrooms, parmesan cheese, basil and a selection of seafood medley, this pasta will certainly satisfy most pasta lovers.

In a word - it's simplicity done right.

Signature Club Sandwich - RM18

A simple club sandwich with the expected ingredients within. Eggs, chicken leg, streaky bacon, lettice, tomatoes, avocado and cheese. It's quite nice really, and for 18 bucks, I think it's a fair price for its portion.

The Champignons wouldn't be complete without their very own signature desserts. Spearheaded by Chef Gary Chang and Pastry Chef Kingsley Kwoh who were trained from an award-winning French Dining restaurant. These 2 are set to create some of the fanciest and most finiest French Patisserie & Desserts at an affordable price for all to try.

It certainly does look absolutely stunning.

Beautiful yet incredibly difficult to master, these desserts are the tip of the iceberg of what is being offered at Taste by Champignons.

Each and every dessert has a story to tell, with unexpecting flavours hidden within.

Can't say no to macarons now can we?

Some of what we had were their signature items:

Elderflower - Elderflower Mousse with Guava Compote, filled with Strawberry & Pink Guava Jelly and sat on a bed of Vanilla genoise and Biscuit. A light and tarty little dessert.

Chocolate Hazelnut - Definitely a family favourite. The sweet balance of Dark Chocolate Mousse and Chocolate Sponge creates this really nice 'Kinder Beuno' sort of flavour. Kids will definitely love it.

Cherry - Though it looks like an apple (which is honestly my first thought), it's a concoction of Dark Chocolate Mousse with Chantilly Cream, Cherry Compote on Chocolate Sponge, sitting on a bed of Brunch Biscuit & Base.

The men behind these desserts!

All and all, Taste by Champignons is a great place for a quality meal that will not pierce a hole through your wallet. Food are done well, with no added drama.  Simple simple whole foods that everyone can enjoy.

Desserts are certainly something to talk about, and for sweet-toothers out there, do give them a try.

Hagi Japanese Cuisine @ Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI), PJ

It's been a while since my last write-up, and since Malaysia has been going through weeks of MCO (Movement Control Order) due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it's safe to say that I was stuck at home for a really long time without decent nutrition (or so to say). Which is why I'd like to share my recent discovery, on possibly one of the fanciest Japanese delivery in Malaysia!

Customizable Sushi Platter that can be up to RM1000!

Customized Sushi Platter - RM200++

In any great Japanese restaurants, Sushi is one of those things you can expect to do really well. In fact, most of the time, it's being used as a benchmark of how good the restaurant is. Here, we have Hagi Japanese Cuisine's very own customizable Sushi Platter!

From only RM200+, you can expect a variety of unique Nigiri and Maki. The selection of the day I had was Salmon, Maguro (Tuna), Kampachi (Yellowtail), Suzuki (Japanese Sea Bass), Engawa Fin (Fluke Fin) - this was my absolute favourite and I'll get back to it soon, Salmon Aburi Maki, Futomaki & Osomaki.

Aburi Engawa Fin Nigiri

This is probably one of the most unique Nigiri during my visit to Hagi Japanese Cuisine. It's called Engawa Fin, or rather Fluke Fin. It's fatty and really buttery, much more than Salmon Belly, though fairly identical. Definitely my favourite, and highly recommended for those who really like belly.

Red Vinegar Sushi Rice

What makes Hagi Japanese Cuisine really unique is also their use of Red Vinegar in their Sushi Rice. Popular in several regions around Japan, the use of Red Vinegar adds a little more Umami to the dish. It is also a staple in quite a number of Michelin Starred restaurants in Japan.

Hagi Japanese Cuisine also allows their customer to customized their Sushi Platter according to their own budget and liking. Prices range from RM200 all the way up to RM1,000! Yes, RM1,000, you'd definitely expect a fantastic feast of premium sushi.

Airflown fishes are brought in twice every week, ensuring freshness in every bite. A wide range of seafood delight such as prawns, scallop, fish, and sea urchin are just some of what's being brought in.

For those looking for something a little more filling, Maki is a great choice.

Aside from their Sushi Platter, they also have a variety of Don to choose from - all of which are incredibly premium and undeniably delicious.

Steak Don (Wagyu/Non-Wagyu) - RM60 / add. + Market Price

Starting with their Steak Don, it's done absolutely beautifully with a juicy slab of beef seared to perfection. Nice and rare in the middle, gorgeous sear on the edge. It's also served with sauteed mushrooms with reduced Signature Sauce, and finished with Herb Infused Butter.

This bowl of Don is rich and well-packed with Umami. Each bite is incredibly tender, making this bowl of Steak Don one of the best of its kind. Definitely recommended!

Special Chirashi Don - RM180

Nothing but the best of the ocean in this bowl. Gorgeous Otoro (Bluefin Tuna Belly), Hotate (Japanese Scallop), Maguro (Tuna), Engawa Fin (Fluke Fin), Uni and of course, my favourite Ikura (Salmon Eggs). This is definitely the titan of Dons. Everything was done to perfection, with flavours that really last in your mouth.

It is without doubt that it's also really fresh, where the essence of the sea is definitely distinguishable.

Chirashi Don - RM80

A slightly simpler and more humble version as compared to the Special Chirashi Don. This with the lack of Maguro & Uni, but still as delicious with less than half the price.

Chirashi Don - RM88/RM68 (with Uni/for delivery)

Those that prefer a little more variety, and something lighter should definitely try this out. A generous selection of 3 different fishes of day, Avocado, Cucumber, Tamago and of course, Ikura! Simple and delightful, definitely worth going for.

Salmon Mentai Maki

As mentioned previously, their selection of Maki was pretty good. This particular Salmon Mentai Maki is a crowd favourite - and personally, I do enjoy this as well. Salmon and cucumber, rolled in seaweed and red vinegar rice, finished with salmon sashimi & Aburi Mentaiko - a true classic with a great punch of flavour.

Avocado Unagi Maki - RM48

For Unagi & Avocado lovers, this is definitely for you. Generous portion of Unagi on top of Avocado Maki, creating a balance of sweet savoury, as well as freshness and tartness. Both this and the Salmon Mentai Maki are really popular amongst their customers, and highly rated!

Aside from deliveries, Hagi Japanese Cuisine actually prides themselves in serving some of the most affordable premium Omakase in the market. With prices starting at RM180 per person and a beautiful decor (as well as private rooms), it's definitely well worth the money.

Those looking for a private chef for an event can also contact them as they do provide Private Dining during this CMCO period. Just tell them what you'd like and they will send a chef to your home, preparing everything on the spot. An advance booking for 1 week is required.

So if you're looking for a place to celebrate, or simply just for a great Japanese meal, Hagi Japanese Cuisine may just be the one you're looking for!

Xiao Long Kan Hotpot Delivery Services @ Fahrenheit 88, KL

$

Mala has been the craze for the past year, and during the MCO period, it was quite a challenge trying to get steamboat/hotpot/shabu-shabu delivered. Now, despite us currently being in RMCO (Recovery Movement Control Order), and being allowed to dine outside, there are still certain limitations at place.

Which is why Xiao Long Kan Malaysia has opt to offer their very own private delivery services. As I know there are quite a number of Xiao Long Kan with the exact same name, this delivery service is offered by the branch at Fahrenheit 88 & Gurney Plaza Penang.

The delivery itself comes with both the induction cooker as well as the huge-ass copper pot - Ying Yong style. However, there will be a RM250 deposit for the pot, and a minimum order of RM500 (for the pot loan) for takeaway and delivery.

Hotpot wouldn't be complete without this, the very essence that gives it that rich and velvety taste - Chilli Oil!

My order came with the Signature Mala Soup Base and Tomato Base, in which I must say, was surprisingly good. Here we have clear broth pouring into that block of chilli oil.

And here we have the rich and savoury tomato base, which I'd highly recommend. It packed a whole lot of flavour and works great with most tofu, beancurd or vegetables. It was a little odd with my beef, but it wasn't too bad. I would say say the mala for proteins and tomato soup for veggies.

For my order of meat, I have both pork and beef. My favourite would definitely have to be the 'Chilli Slippery Beef', which honestly I don't know what it's called, but I can say it's absolutely delightful. The sliced ribeye was great as well, with everything sent over being really fresh.

For those that loves fatty pieces of meat, the pork belly & bacon is definitely a great way to soak up all the broth.

My favourite beancurd skin so far. Really soaks up anything you'd throw at it. Definitely worth getting!

For the sides, they have a variety of handmade balls, dumplings and veggies as well.

A comforting meal for easily 3-4 pax at home, also, a great way to use their amazing broth with some of your own ingredients.

Xiao Long Kan Hotpot 小龙坎老火锅 is also available on Hungry App for delivery within 20km. Alternatively, delivery and takeaway can be arranged by calling the outlets:

Fifty Tales @ Bandar Sri Damansara (BSD)

Fans of ramen, you might enjoy this new 'ramen' joint. Nestled between the housing estates of Bandar Sri Damansara, Fifty Tales is home to a localised version of Japanese Ramen. One might call it Malaysian-ramen, or perhaps, Chinese-ramen.

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon - RM26
My very first reaction to this place was, ramen! However, it turned out to be a slightly different version of what I'd thought it'l lbe, and in this case, it's a form of localised-ramen.

Unlike their OG series, this actually comes with their famous braised pork and prawns, served in a clear pork-bone broth with added Shao Hsing wine. Boiled over a long period of time, the broth is both rich yet clear and light. It has sufficient flavour to coat the handmade egg noodles - which was enjoyably chewy and firm.

The soft-boiled egg along with the perfectly braised and seared pork, as well as the prawns, were a great addition to the dish itself. Definitely recommended.

Funk Mee - RM18

A dry-noodle version of bean paste with minced pork, shredded spring onions and sliced carrots. An interesting take for those who prefers dry-noodle, not too salty, with just the right of flavour. The noodles also did a great job in soaking all that sauce.

Generous serving of sauces & vegetables.

That's the boss right in the middle - losing all his hair from success. Friendly team with an amazingly clean kitchen.

The interior is a modern/rustic look with a silver/grey & brown finish. For those sitting at the bar, you can see them in action, preparing your noodles.

If you're interested to know more, you could always talk to the owner over the counter.

Fifty Tales is located at Bandar Sri Damansara, right next to a housing area. For some reason I wasn't able to go in using the usual road, and had to go in through the residence's guardhouse. A little stupid, but it worked. Location is quite quaint with ample parking, so no worries there.

Yakiniku Goro Authentic Japanese BBQ @ Desa Sri Hartamas, KL

Beef lovers out there, here's one place you'll definitely have to check out. Yakiniku Goro at Desa Sri Hartamas is a rather small Japanese BBQ place owned and run by a Japanese family. You'll notice the authenticity of the establishment as you enter the shop - where there are mostly Japanese customers (when I was there, I was the only local, everyone else was Japanese).

Tokushima Wagyu Side Skirt - RM65 (100g)
Starting with some of the premium cuts, this Tokushima Wagyu Side Skirt is definitely one of my favourites. I'm not sure how it compares to their Japan Premium Short Rib at RM100 (100g), but this was definitely well worth the money.

Just look at how gorgeous that meat is.

It's really beefy with a good balance of fat, making the meat incredibly tender and juicy. You can definitely go both ways in terms of grilling - either charred or medium rare. Both are equally great. Maximum flavour, reasonable price, highly recommended.

USA Premium Beef Short Rib - RM35 (100g)

Now unlike the Premium Wagyu, this USA Premium Beef Short Rib is a fraction of the price. Coming in reasonably at only RM35 per serving (roughly 8-9 slices), it certainly is budget-friendly and delicious.

Beautifully charred on the outside.

On its own, the beefiness was pretty good. Incomparable to the Japanese Wagyu, but plenty of merits on its own. It's also a little firmer.

Every table will be given one of these pots with charcoal inside. Its surface area is fairly large, allowing you to grill several cuts of meat at one time.

Another unique thing about Yakiniku Goro is the sauces served for BBQ. On the left, you'll have a soy-base sauce, followed by a radish and spicy-sauce on the right. I personally like the radish one most as I thought it works best with the fatty slices Wagyu.

Japanese Appetiser Set (Regular) - RM25

If you enjoy Korean banchan, then I think you might enjoy this. 6 servings of appetisers of the day. Is it pricey? Yes. But was it nice? Also yes. A great way to lighten and freshen up.

Spicy Beef Broth with Rice - RM20

For starch, I went with this unassuming Spicy Beef Broth with Rice. I don't remember what it's called in Japanese, but I would say it's similar to a spicy-miso-type ramen, but instead of noodles, you get rice. It was alright, not too bad, and works great as a filler should the meat not be sufficient or perhaps you're too broke like me.

Saba - RM20

Standard Saba (Mackerel) fish that's been grilled and served with a side of lemon. It was okay, nothing too fancy. I did expected a little more 'fishy essence' to the Saba but it was pretty normal. Would not recommend this one.

Overall, I think Yakiniku Goro is a fantastic place for anyone looking for authentic Japanese BBQ on a budget. Quality of meat (although technically I only had 2) was fantastic. Service was great and friendly, and also awesome Suntory Highball price during Happy Hour - RM15 per glass.

Hyatt House Staycation During CMCO @ Mont Kiara, KL

$

Covid-19 has really put a stop to travelling - especially for me. Which is why I think the next best thing is staycation. Albeit a little weird for me as I don't do much staycation, but Hyatt House seems like a pretty decent place located in the heart of Mont Kiara.

If anything, it's really convenient.

My amazing view outside my stay at Hyatt House.

The fairly grand and beautiful lobby of Hyatt House. Everything was really clean and well-maintained. Spotless - probably due to the lower occupancy rate, but regardless, it was nice to see hotels like these keep up their standards of cleanliness.

Really cute looking key-card upon checking in.

This is the most basic room available and I would have to say that it's more than enough. It's incredibly spacious with the Super-King bed by Sealy (which I personally love), a sofa on the side with a console table, and a working desk as well.

Personally, I think that the room's vibe was just about right. It may not have the most 'resort-ish' feeling, but as a staycation room, it's more than sufficient. Everything was clean and organised. Props to the house-keeping team.

The bathroom comes with the giant mirror that lit on both side, making it incredibly bright. More than enough to do your make-up and what not. However, what I love most about the bathroom is the hot shower.

High pressure wash with both rainwater shower-head as well regular shower-head. Water was really hot as well, which makes showering a fantastic feeling. Loved the bathroom.

The room itself also comes with a small pantry - well not exactly a pantry but a space for you to prep simple meals. There's also a microwave in each room which is really useful for those on a long-term stay. TV was fairly huge as well and it does offer a wide variety of channels.

*The 2 photos above are the Private Sky Terrace.

Hyatt House also has this amazing sky view of Mont Kiara, which includes a rooftop bar, swimming pool and a rentable Private Sky Terrace for parties and what not.

For the Private Sky Terrace, Hyatt House provides you all the utensils you'll need for a BBQ at only RM388+ for 4 hours. All you'll have to bring are food, drinks and of course, company. So if you're looking to party privately, this may be a place that you'd consider.

*As CMCO rules  may change in the future, their maximum capacity as of writing this is 5 pax.*

You can even rent out the entire Private Sky Terrace for a night - where it comes with 2 rooms with King-sized beds and a couch - much like your very own holiday home. I would say that it does give out that Sydney-Gold Coast vibes.

Now for gym-freaks, you'd love what they've offered here. An arsenal of gym equipments along with protective barrier for social distancing, as well as a private yoga studio area and empty floor area.

If you're not into exercising, then you might enjoy the entertainment room they've provided. Equipped with a pool table, foosball and PS4!

So far during my stay, there weren't anyone occupying the place - but it is available for any hotel guests.

During this Covid period, all hotel buffets are temporarily halted. However, one can enjoy their breakfast at the comfort of their own room. You'll have to go to the dining area and choose what you'd like and they'll pack everything for you.

Here we have some of what they offered - mostly bread, various types of eggs, hash-browns, sausages, baked beans, fruits and salad. Coffee, tea and juices are also available as well.

There's also cereals and many more.

Hyatt House is also more than just a hotel as it mainly provides long-term stays for ex-pats. I guess it really does make more sense as the prices start from roughly RM6,000++ monthly. Good thing is, it comes with everything you'll need to live comfortably.

A mini-sized kitchen, dining table, couch area, TV, wifi, plates, bowls and even stuff you could borrow such as rice cooker from their list of rentals, all at no added cost. More expensive units also include a washing machine, as well as dishwasher.

Here is the next size up. This unit if I'm not mistaken, is roughly 500+ sq ft. It's a comfortable size even for me, but prices may go as high as RM8k++. Housekeeping is done 3 times per week should you just to stay the month or more. As you can see, it's a fully equipped kitchenette.

This unit here comes with a terrace area right outside. A great place to hangout and relax, should you ever require such a huge space. It also comes with 2 rooms and 2 shower. Bathtub is included as well, along with washing machine, dishwasher, and a microwave.

So for those who are looking for a staycation - or even a long term weekly/monthly stay in the heart of KL, Hyatt House at Mont Kiara is a great option.

It's walking distance to 163 Retail Park, which has plenty of restaurants around, or right at Acoris where there are bars and restaurant as well. Going to central KL would take no more than 20 minutes by car.

For those worried about the current Covid situation, I do believe within the context of staycation - Hyatt House is really maintaining their standards of cleanliness.

"Hyatt House Kuala Lumpur, Mont’Kiara has announced that it has achieved Global Biorisk Advisory Council®️ (GBAC) STAR™️ accreditation, the gold standard for prepared facilities. Under the guidance of GBAC, a Division of ISSA, the worldwide cleaning industry association, Hyatt House Kuala Lumpur, Mont’Kiara has implemented the most stringent protocols for cleaning, disinfection and infectious disease prevention in its facilities."

So no worries there, stay safe and enjoy what's left of 2020!

Da Long Yi Hotpot 大龙燚火锅 @ Sunway Nexis, Kota Damansara, PJ

Marbled Beef Slice - RM46/180g or RM29/90g

Da Long Yi Hotpot 大龙燚火锅 has some of the most amazing selection beef. Just look at that amazing marbling! Quite surprisingly, they've also got quite a huge selection of beef.

Originating from Chengdu, Da Long Yi Hotpot 大龙燚火锅 is a Sichuan Mala Hotpot Restaurant with over 300 branches worldwide. Now, they've finally arrived here in Malaysia with their first outlet in Kota Damansara, while the 2nd  outlet is in Johor bahru and 3rd will be coming soon in Bukit Bintang respectively.

Apart from their amazing soups, they've focused quite a bit of effort on their ingredients/dishes. From premium-grade beef slices to weird Duck tongue, it truly is an authentic experience altogether.

Signature Mala Soup/Mushroom Soup/Tomato Soup - RM42 (3 soup base)

There are 4 soups available - the 4th being Winter Melon Chicken soup. Quite honestly, the 3 soups here were extremely flavourful. The Mala wasn't very spicy, but it was fairly 'numbing'.

The mushroom was rich in umami, as if its being cooked for over 24 hours. All the essence and goodness of the mushroom in 1 serving - absolutely delightful.

My favourite would be the tomato soup here. I find it richer than most other Hotpot brands out there, and you could really taste the tomato-ness.

Australia Wagyu Beef Slice - RM88
Striploin Beef Slice - RM35/110g or Rm19/90g
New Zealand Lamb Slice - RM26

Now what better way to enjoy Da Long Yi's Signature broth if it isn't with some amazing Beef Slices? Absolutely gorgeous, definitely recommended for any beef enthusiast.

Portion-wise, it's quite generous. Everything is served fresh on ice, ensuring the quality a little longer right beside the steaming pot of soup.

For seafood lovers, no worries, they've got you covered. Crayfish, fish, squid and many more.

Bamboo Prawn & Fish Paste - RM28/100g or RM45/200g

Absolutely loved this. The prawn paste had like ebiko in them, and when cooked and eaten, produces a really interesting crunch on something so soft. It's also really well packed with flavour. Definitely recommended!

Mala Beef - RM18/90g or RM32/180g

One of my absolute favourite. Marinated beef topped with chilli flakes + chilli seeds from china, along with some amazing spice-rub that makes this dish tantalizing. Simply thinking about it would make me salivate.

Beef Sticks - RM22

Simple but well marinated beef on a stick. Easy to cook and easy to eat - no mess. Loved the idea, similar to our Lok-lok but with premium ingredients.

Tendered Beef Slice - RM25

Now with most Mala-hotpot places, they do have their own version of this Tendered Beef Slice. However, Da Long Yi's version was easily one of the top 3. Not only is it really smooth and silky, it's incredibly tender and flavourful as well. The essence of the cow punches right through - an absolute delight for me.

Duck Tongue - RM18

The first of the extraordinary dishes - duck tongue. Definitely not what I'd expect, but apparently it's a thing with authentic Chinese hotpot. Definitely scary-looking, but most would agree that it's quite delicious.

Pork Brain - RM8

What did I tell ya? Definitely a little special. Not something I'm entirely familiar with - nor do I think I would like to get myself familiarized with such a dish. However, as it's stated above, this is Pork Brain. Surprisingly small, definitely not trying this.

Those who are a little more adventurous, I do recommend/dare you to try it out.

Signature Platter of Beef Trip, Duck Intestine & Pork Aorta - RM32

Okay, not as weird, but here it is. Definitely not my kinda thing, but for those who love beef tripe, this is definitely the place to go. Everything was well cleaned and served. Goes great with the Mala Soup, just wasn't to my liking.

There are many more really unique items that we're not exposed to here in Malaysia, and is rather common over in China. Things like Duck intestine, fresh pork aorta, pork stomach, pork kidney, duck gizzard and many more.

Personally, I prefer my hotpot with just the premium meat, seafood and veggies as I'm a simple man.

Kelp - RM 8

Surprisingly huge kelp tied in a ribbon. Not bad.

Pork Blood - RM8

Mushroom Platter - RM20

This platter comes with 5 different types of mushrooms - Enoki, Shimeji, Oyster, Abalone and Black Fungus.

Lotus - RM10

For RM10, that's quite a lot of lotus. Each slice was quite thick as well.

And of course, a steamboat session wouldn't be complete without the basic balls. Lobster balls, seafood tofu, cheese tofu, beef balls, pork balls, pretty much all the balls you can imagine, they have it here. Relatively generous portion too.

Premium-grade Crabsticks - a lot better than the usual square ones.

Of course, here are some of the must-haves for any steamboat/hotpot.

Vegetable Platter - RM20

Each Vegetable Platter comes with 5 different types of vegetables. An easy pick should you are lazy to choose.

Harbin/TsingTao/Somersby/Kronenbourg1664 Blanc

I'd personally go for the Harbin beer - it's a lot lighter and sweeter, perfect for this hotpot occasion. It's also probably the only place I've seen with Harbin Beer as most places go with TsingTao - which is another one of my favourite.

Black Tea Stinky Tofu - RM15

Da Long Yi Hotpot 大龙燚火锅 also pride themselves with their choice of Stinky Tofu. They've personally brought in a famous-China brand of Stinky Tofu to be incorporated within the hotpot. It's rich, and well packed with flavour. It's also not exactly stinky, but really aromatic.

Brown Sugar Glutinous Rice Cake & Deep Fried Mini Buns - RM15 & RM10

If you're really hungry and can't wait for the soup to boil and cook, these snacks are a great way to kickstart the meal. The glutinous rice cake is finished with a brown sugar glaze, followed by peanut powder, which gives it a really sweet & savoury outcome.

Fried Mini Buns are always great with condensed milk - my favourite. It also works great with the Mala Soup!

Condiments are available - mix and match to your liking.

Get a feel of ancient China with their splendid decor, where you'll feel like you're actually dining there. Amazing woodwork and design, loved the double-storey atmosphere to it.

Those who can't get enough of Mala Hotpot are recommended to get some of their own products to try. Imported directly from China, each of these sauces or instant hotpot packages are made specifically by Da Long Yi Hotpot 大龙燚火锅.

You can purchase all these from the counter.

Overall, Da long Yi Hotpot 大龙燚火锅 is definitely one of the best steamboat/hotpot/mala places in town. With competition almost everywhere, it truly is hard to stand out, and I think Da Long Yi Hotpot 大龙燚火锅 has done a pretty good job in distinguishing themselves from the others.

Ingredients were fresh and portion were generous, soup base was flavourful and service was attentive. The interior felt really authentic and simply put, the experience was great. There's aos 2 private rooms available with the small one being able to fit 6-8 pax, and the big room at 10 pax (with minimum spending).

Every customer also gets a free Signature Scented Tea upon dining in!

Definitely worth checking out.
